My personal experience with Honey
When it comes to the benefits of Raw, organic honey, people just don't get much more enthusiastic than me. My personal story is as follows. I discovered honey about 3 years ago. My initial reason for trying honey was somewhat superficial. My original intent was to find a sweet substitute for my intense sugar cravings. I was trying to loose weight, and as most of us know the first food demon to cut out of our diet is sugar.
Once I zeroed out the sugar I was in desperate need of a enjoyable replacement. And honey, a taste preference not held by everyone, was perfect for me. In fact, it was much more desirable than the taste of sugar. I used the super sweet sugar substitute for coffee, dressings, smoothies, tea, on fruit, and even plain! These of course are just a few of a wide array of different uses I discovered throughout the last 3 years.
To continue. It wasn't until a few weeks after I replaced by nasty sugar habit that I began to realize all the different benefits I was obtaining through my use of the honey. My hair and skin were clear. My cravings for artificial foods was gone, and ravenous hunger subsided. All my digestion issues were non existent. My energy was through the roof and I was able to think with clarity. My Joints seemed to click and crack much less. My tonsils were no longer chronically swollen. And not to mention, I was loosing weight!
It's very easy to see how one might have enthusiasm for such a food. In fact, people around the world have revered honey for it's cure all properties for thousands of years. Even gaining honorable mentions in major religious texts such as the Christian Bible, The Hebrew Bible, and The Qur'an.
How is it made?
In the spring when the flowers are blossomed, Bees fly from plant to plant collecting the pollen and nectar using their tongues, like long straws, to suck the substances from the plants. This nectar is stored in their stomachs during the transport back to the hive. The nectar mixes with proteins and enzymes in the bees stomachs where it is turned into honey. The bees then release the honey into the comb at their hive. This process is repeated until the comb is filled completely. The color, texture/consistency, and taste of the honey will very greatly depending on the flowers and plants the bees gather from in each area. As you can see there is a very intelligent process involved in the creation of honey. Pretty awesome stuff!
Uses
The obvious one here is taking it internally. Using it in recipes and as a replacement for the not so healthful sweeteners in coffee, tea, dressings, ect. To be used before meals for its digestive benefits. Or just eaten plain to help subdue your sweet tooth. However, honey has just as many uses outside as it does inside. Used topically honey can be very helpful to stop the pain of burns/wounds and accelerate the healing proccess as well. Honey is used as an antibacterial for infected wounds, and to ensure that they don't become infected. It's used as a phenomenal skin treatment for hives and itching. And it makes a perfect, gentle exfoliant and is commonly used in face masks, hair treatments/hair masks, and soaps.
