What's in your tap water?

What's in it?
When people think about drinking their 8 glasses of water a day the last thing on their minds is probably where that water comes from and even less often, what's in it. Because of its clear property it's hard to imagine that it could be riddled with all sorts of different chemicals! Clear means clean right? Not so much. It turns out that every time you drink a glass of water, unfiltered from the tap, you are harming your body in more ways than you can think.
1. Fluoride
This chemical has long been hailed for it's tooth decay preventing properties by Health/dental professionals all over America. And the sad part is that the general public takes these authoritive opinions as truth without any personal investigation of any kind! Fluoride is a NUCLEAR WASTE byproduct. Yes. Sounds bad doesn't it. A long list of health issues can be seen with strong connection to fluoride use, including:
•Arthritis
•dental fluorosis/tooth decay
•thyroid gland disturbances
•cancer
•bone disease
•CFS (Chronic fatigue syndrome)
•Kidney disease
•Fibromyalgia
•Studies showed development of bone cancer in lab rats
The list could go on.
2. Chlorine
Chlorine is so commonplace to Americans that we rarely think twice about drinking it on a daily basis. Upon analyzing exactly what chlorine is used for, common sense could tell us that it might not be the safest substance for regular consumption. Chlorine is supposedly used in public water supply for the prevention of bacterial contamination/spread of bacterial disease. I for one don't feel safe drinking something put in water to KILL off living organisms. Something about that seems counterproductive to my health. Data shows that this chemical leads to all sorts of issues with long term exposure of small amounts.
Such as:
•Tooth corrosion
•Colon cancer
•Heart disease
•Senility
•acne/hair loss
•asthma
And much more.
3.Prescription Drugs
In multiple tests of tap water from different parts of America traces of prescription drugs have been found. When you take that Advil or that Prozac in the morning your contaminating the public water supply all throughout the day, each time you use the restroom. Evidently our public water filtration systems are unable to remove these unnatural chemicals. And if you don't think these drugs are effecting you the way popping a pill would, think again. Depending on your location any of these or combination of could be found in your water supply.
•Pain medications
•anti-depressants
•steroids
•High cholesterol medication
•epilepsy medication
•anti-biotic
•asthma medication
•anti-anxiety medication
•tranquilizers
•estrogen
And more! Can you imagine how many foreign chemicals you are bringing into your body? A cocktail of chemicals with unknown compounding effects and you don't even have a prescription.
What can you do?
Water is more important to us than food! If the water we are drinking is degrading our health we undermine our efforts to eat a healthful diet, exercise, ect. It's as simple as taking a few simple steps to remove as much of these toxins from our water as we can.
1.Get a shower filter.
This is really important. We all love our hot baths at the end of the night there is no denying. But each time we do this in chlorinated water we are inhaling poisonous vapors into our lungs. A literal Gas chamber!
2. Faucet filters/built in filtration systems.
If I had the money to afford a fancy built in reverse osmosis filter you better believe I'd have it. As for now I'm settling for a cheaper, removable faucet filter. These very largely in price but the quality is worth the extra buck I assure you.
3.Steam Distillation filters
Counter top devices that filter pots of water at a time. You don't have to install them or replace them every so often. They do have a time-length process however that may be a slight inconvenience for some.
4. Bottled water
This will probably add up to being much more than forking out for a filter would cost. Over time it really does add up quickly. A gallon of distilled water generally costs around 1-2$. At 1/2-1 gallon a day you can most likely see where the temporary financial inconvenience might make it worthwhile to buy a filter.
These are just some of many methods one can use. The main goal, no matter which method you use is to remove as much Chlorine, Fluoride, and Prescription drug chemicals from your water as possible. The less the better!
More actions you can take to limit chemical exposure
Limit/replace use of fluoridated toothpaste.
There are large doses of fluoride in every brush full of toothpaste. Hence the poisoning warning on the label! Plain old baking soda, tooth soap, or even sea salt are great alternatives that work just as well if not better than conventional pastes. #Most toothpastes contain sugar!)
Do not swim in public/chlorinated pools
If you must swim in a chlorinated pool, let it be, preferably outdoor. Indoor pools with high chlorine content can be very dangerous. The mixture of the chlorine and chemicals used as bacteria disinfectants may actually result in the creation of Chloroform. A highly toxic chemical. Which can be easily inhaled in a contained area such as an indoor pool room.
House hold cleaners
Be aware of the ingredients in the cleaning agents you use to disinfect your living space! Especially bathroom/kitchen areas that are frequented throughout the day. There are many healthy alternative cleaners that do the job just as well. Baking soda, lemon, and vinegar are perfectly healthy/safe alternatives to name a few.
I hope you found this informative in one way or another. Live a long, healthy, happy life!

Frightening indeed. Thanks for the useful tips. I had no idea fluoride was so dangerous, or that it was a nuclear byproduct, which certainly explains why it's pushed so hard, doesn't it? My only concern would be the reverse osmosis filters. Don't they waste about four times as much as they filter? What are the alternatives?
Thanks Worldofwow. I already use Brita filters, but I'll look into the Fluoride filtering solutions.
Lots of interesting information here. The only truly safe water is distilled. As for Chlorine and fluoride, they're only meant to be taken in extremely small amounts, so don't overdo it. As for me, I avoid chlorine entirely when I can. Who wants cancer of the colon? Yikes! Later!

Drinking tap water without first removing the chlorine is like eating a sweet without first removing the wrapper.
